{"id":1279,"date":"2017-10-18T06:20:33","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T06:20:33","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2019-02-19T01:58:06","modified_gmt":"2019-02-18T23:58:06","slug":"remittances-to-rise-according-to-world-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jassemajaka.com\/?p=1279","title":{"rendered":"Remittances to rise according to World Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"dnn_ctr793_ViewBNCustomDNNArticleDetails_Span_Reportedby\" class=\"NOrmalDataDetailsGeorgia\">Shikrallah Nakhoul<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Remittance inflows are expected to reach $7.87 billion this year, up 3.3 percent compared with 2016, according to the World Bank\u2019s Migration and Development Brief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The remittance inflows for 2017 will account for 14.6 percent of the country\u2019s GDP.\u00a0Roger Melki, economist and consultant at Bank BEMO, said that the increase in interest rates on local deposits and the financial engineering operations of the Central Bank (BDL) are attracting more funds to the country.\u00a0He said that some self-employed Lebanese working abroad, especially in Europe, are moving their fiscal residence to the local market in order to optimize their fiscal situation. This also contributes to the growth in remittances, Melki said.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Economist Jassem Ajaka said that improvements in the North American economies, especially that of the United States, are having a positive impact on the income of Lebanese expatriates there and consequently their remittances. Contrary to common perceptions, the U.S. is a major source of remittances, he said.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jassemajaka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/8c33b7_e744d2e2fcb845889d1234dd116424a2~mv2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"161\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">There are also positive developments in the economies of Germany and in some African countries where Lebanese expatriates are becoming more active in business, especially trade, Ajaka said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0The cost of sending money to MENA countries was 7.4 percent in the third quarter of 2017, slightly above the global average of 7.2 percent, according to the World Bank\u2019s brief.
